Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum is the Dutch National Museum and dedicates all of its works to arts and history of Amsterdam. Located in the Museum Square, Amsterdam South.
The building was designed by Pierre Cuypers and was first opened in 1885. The main building closed for a long period of time for a huge renovation in 2003 and finally reopened its doors after 10 years on 13th April 2013. In 2013 and 2014 it was the most visited museum in Amsterdam with a record 2.47 million visitors through its doors.
The Rijksmuseum currently holds the countries largest collection of art and artefacts. The museum has 80 galleries which showcase 800 years of Dutch art and historic objects, these include 22 Rembrandts including “Night Watch”, and 4 Vermeers including “The Milk Maid”.

Van Gogh Museum
Located in Museum Square, Amsterdam South the Van Gogh Museum is dedicated to the beautiful works of Vincent Van Gogh. The museum opened on the 2nd June 1973 and its buildings were designed by Gerrit Rietveld and Kisho Kurokawa.
The museum contains the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings in the world. The permanent exhibit is made up of 200 paintings and 500 drawings.
The museum is the most visited museum in Amsterdam and the 23rd most visited museum in the world. The frames that you see on display here are truly stunning and in keeping with the paintings time periods to truly amplify the masterpieces on display in this popular museum.
Rembrandthuis
The Rembradthuis Museum also known as the Rembrandt House Museum is an historic house museum located in the Jodenbreestraat in Amsterdam.
The Painter Rembradt brought the house in 1639 and lived and worked there painting until 1656 where he was forced to move due to bankruptcy, some of his most famous works of art were produced inside the four walls of this house.
The house has been thoroughly reconstructed inside to show and portray exactly how the house would have looked and felt when Rembrandt was living and painting there, alongside this there is a modern building adjoined to the house which is a gallery displaying all of Rembrants work, and also some objects he collectred from all over the world.

Hermitage Amsterdam
On the banks of the Amstel River in Amsterdam and housed in a building dating back to 1681 which was originally used as a home for the elderly, this quaint building is now where the Hermitage, Amsterdam is located.
The Hermitage Amsterdam is a branch museum of the State Hermitage in Russia.
The museum does not hold any permanent collections, however it does host exhibitions twice a year of collections from the main Hermitage museum. With the exhibits always changing its a great way to see many different art collections and frames.
Stedelijk Museum
The Stedelijk museum is a contemporary and modern art museum located at Museum Square in Amsterdam South.
With over 675, 000 visitors yearly the museum has some wonderful artwork on display all complete with some wonderful modern and contemporary frames to showcase the pieces. Some of the artwork on display here is:
- Pre-war collection that includes works by Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse and Chagall.
- Works by Vincent Van Gogh
- Collections of art and drawings by various modern artists such as De Kooning, Middleton, Stella and Kounellis.
One of the unique attractions of this museum is the extension to the building that is shaped like a giant bathtub. The museum is currently Amsterdams go to institution for all things modern and contemporary.
